Impressive, why lithium-ion batteries are stored and transported in special containers

Fireproof storage and transportation of electric car batteries and e-bike batteries

The number of lithium-ion batteries or rechargeable batteries in circulation is increasing daily. This is probably not only due to the fact that new products powered by rechargeable batteries are constantly being launched on the market, but also because lithium-ion batteries have grown in popularity in the last 10 years (2010-2020) by 89% became cheaper. Well, presumably one causes the other.

The path of a battery

  • Batteries are stored at the battery manufacturer,
  • to be sent to electric vehicle manufacturers or producers of electrical products that use lithium-ion batteries
  • The batteries are temporarily stored there if just-in-time assembly is not possible
  • the batteries are installed and used in the end product
  • At the end of the battery’s service life, the batteries are removed and transported to the disposal company or recycler

Storage of lithium-ion batteries

Both the battery manufacturer and the manufacturer of the end product in which the batteries are installed must take precautions to ensure safe storage. Risk of fire and explosion. Not only for this reason, but also to ensure quality and service life, batteries that have not yet been installed are often stored outdoors. UN-certified storage containers specially designed for storage can be used here.

Transporting the batteries

Both the transport from the battery manufacturer, e.g. to the e-bike or electric vehicle manufacturer, and the intralogistical transport to their production plants, as well as the final transport for battery disposal or battery recycling are declared as hazardous goods transport.

This means that safety precautions must be taken in order to carry out transportation safely and legally.

Transportation by rail, sea or road requires special UN-certified lithium-ion battery transport containers. This applies regardless of whether an undamaged or damaged battery is being transported.

The service life of a lithium-ion battery is finite. It has increased significantly and even multiplied in recent years. But after 2,000 charging cycles the time has probably come for most electric vehicles to dispose of the old battery and replace it with a new one. It is therefore obvious that the number of batteries to be transported will increase significantly in the coming years.

Special features of the battery container

Plastic containers with steel frames ensure safe and proper outdoor storage.

Reusable inner packaging and a fastening system ensure that batteries can be packed and unpacked safely and quickly.

Since lithium-ion batteries have been January 2009 are classified by law as class 9 hazardous goods, there are special regulations for national and international sea, rail and road transportation. It is therefore essential to use an appropriately certified and approved reusable container for transportation.
